Schools

The Inclusive School Communities Project is working with primary and secondary schools in South Australia to build their capacity for inclusive culture and community. Representatives from each school are gathering regularly in a Community of Practice (CoP) to reflect, learn, and share information and ideas. The CoP is providing a platform for peer support focused on inclusive school development; giving participants the space and resources to reflect, explore, learn, synthesize, plan, and apply inclusive school policies and practices.

We now have 15 schools participating in the project and over 25 school representatives attending CoP sessions including principals, deputies, directors, department heads, coordinators, teachers, and teacher aides. We started with five schools late in 2018 and the subsequent schools have followed a staged entry into the CoP starting mid-2019. Each school is at a different stage of their journey to inclusive education and are working on different goals during their engagement in the Inclusive School Communities Project. We are providing the information, resources, and platform to share and explore best-practice and the schools are using this to inspire action back at their sites towards their goals.

Participation in this project is not an endorsement that these schools are doing inclusion perfectly (since inclusion requires ongoing leadership, commitment, effort, and action) however it does convey their motivation to improve and move their schools further along that inclusion continuum.

The 15 schools in the project are communicating and collaborating across sites (and regions of Adelaide) as a network of South Australian schools working towards inclusive education.
